There were a lot of things we wanted to do in the limited time we had on Tahiti before our cruise departed. Of course the true flavor of the island was important, but getting close to the surfing action in Teahupoo was on my list. Fortunately we were able to find Tracey and Unique Tahiti Tours who were able plan the perfect day.
She picked us up from our hotel in her Mercedes van and we made several stops at interesting sights including waterfalls, crystal clear springs, temples, botanical gardens, a grotto and other points of interest. In addition to the local scenery we also learned about Tahitian history and culture. Lunch found us at La Plaga de Maui … the coolest “on the water”restaurant on Tahiti Iti.
Following lunch we made it to Teahupoo where Tracey had booked the boat that took us right into the channel to watch the surfing up close. We were lucky to see the Japanese team practicing for the Olympics. I can’t believe how close to the action we got!
On the way back to Papeete we crossed over to the East side that has a flavor of its own. Beautiful valleys, rivers, vistas, a blow hole and a look into the other side of Papeete that we hadn’t seen.
I’m not sure how we did this all in one day, but Tracey was able customize the tour around our wants and really show us the real people of Tahiti. Her 25 years (+) in Tahiti make her a perfect choice. I highly recommend!
