The Crossroads, officially known as the Crossroads Arts District, is a neighborhood within the Greater Downtown area of Kansas City that is home to more than 400 local artists and 100 independent studios in what is the most concentrated gallery in the nation. Located at 19th Street and Baltimore Avenue, directly south of the Downtown Loop and north of Crown Center, it is more than just an intersection of two streets, it is a vibrant and diverse area that welcomes all walks of life and all forms of artistic expression. Beyond the art galleries, there are dozens of restaurants from late-night diners to high-end sushi, boutique shops, professional design studios, architectural firms and advertising agencies. What are you looking for -- flowers, shoes, live music, furniture, fashion, hamburgers or a glass of beer? You'll find them here. But that's not all. Amidst former abandoned warehouses and historic buildings is Kansas City's famous Film Row district, Brewer's Alley, the historic freight district and hotels. Crossroads, which has a population of 10,000, dates to the 1920s and 1930s when Kansas City established a strong connection to Hollywood, serving as a centralized distribution point for the burgeoning movie industry. At one time, Film Row occupied nearly 20 buildings in a four-block area with major studio tenants such as Twentieth Century Fox, United Artists, Paramount and Warner Brothers. Looking for a place to eat or have a drink? The list includes Jim's, Mildred's, Cafe Corazon, Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ, Green Dirt on Oak, Kon Tiki Room, Morning Rounds Bakery, Union Station Kansas City, Session Taco, Jalapenos Mexican Grill, Farina, Affare, Novel, Gruenauer, Cosmo Burger, Border Brewing Company and Buffalo State Pizza Company & Bar.
