I was interested to experience the Alaska Railroad, and purchased tickets for the trip to Hurricane Gulch. It turned out to be a good move, as the day was overcast with some showers on and off. The view from the train was great and we enjoyed in particular, the vintage dome car. As one of the only remaining "flag" train, it is the only transportation for people who own some of the 1000 cabins that are accessed only by the train. As such it moves slowly, which is great for capturing some of the great scenery along the way. The stops are fun, and some allow people to disembark and photograph passing trains, or visit a delightful book cabin that features the work of Shannon Cartwright. The pinnacle of the ride is that the train stops on the iron bridge completed in 1923 and allows the passengers to peer down into the gulch through the large doors in the cargo car.
