The fact the hike started in Oistens and passed through the Christ Church cemetery and various neighborhoods representing different socio-economic strata of Bajan society before reaching the well-hidden slave burial ground was sociologically illuminating. For one thing, the hike raises moral questions as to who is buried where and why and underscores that social injustice remains a feature of human society no matter who holds temporal power. Since it is nearly impossible to find the site on your own and there are few explanatory placards when you actually reach it, a hike there with a well-informed guide is critical. This guided hike certainly provided that plus delicious local juices at its conclusion. I even picked up some super sweet mangos and the best papaya I have ever eaten along the route.
