The YET tour was excellent. My wife and I hate surprises, so we asked 3 rounds of questions before making our choice, and another two rounds as the date approached. We got prompt, direct responses to all our questions. They were very accommodating to add/subtract/change the focus of each day. Watching other tour groups with 10+ people - moving at the pace of the slowest person - made me appreciate the YET dedicated guides and nimble drivers.
When we told friends that we were going to Egypt I got a lot of questions about safety. My observation is that there were security people in abundance at all the hotels and tour venues and I never felt uncomfortable. There were some locals at the venues who were always trying to create income opportunities but you learn how to ignore them pretty quickly. The "bustling souk" was a little much for my wife, but our guide was on-the-spot with less-hectic but effective shopping options. The drivers seemed to have an intuitive sense on how to safely get anywhere despite the wild driving "rules".
Having an airport representative at each leg was especially helpful. He saved us at least 30 minutes (e.g. found a way to get our boarding passes without the line) and in general knew where everything was, what to say (and not say) to the ticket agents, customs guys, etc. This was especially helpful when Abu Simbel security took an unexpected interest in my 3-inch eyeglass repair kit screwdriver.
We spent our first day recovering from jet-lag at the pool, but the rest of the trip was pretty packed with wonderful experiences. The old adage "pictures don't do it justice" applies to at least one venue in each town. My wife was particularly amazed at Abu Simbel, so don't skip it just because it is out of the way. The guides in Cairo, Luxor, and Abu Simbel knew someone at every venue, and had insightful responses to our questions. I even felt comfortable asking questions about Egyptian culture and politics. Our Luxor guide was particularly good at advising us on how to navigate each venue quickly so as to get the most "bang for our buck", minimizing the vendor gauntlet hassle, and always had the foresight to call ahead to the driver to minimize our time waiting for the pickup. Our only disappointment was that the Carter House "recreation of King Tut's tomb" was only the rooms (no artifact reproductions as I was expecting), but this was not YET's fault.
I'm generally not keen on cruises, but the small boat never felt crowded, and the food was a great mix of local and familiar cuisine. We got out early while it was cool each day, saw everything we wanted to see and then were back on the boat in time to have a drink and review photos from the day before dinner. I'm not normally one to sit around by the pool, but the sun and cool breeze from the Nile is hard to beat.
I was fortunate to have a friend advise us to use YET. But now I am happy to say they were integral to an outstanding trip and I can recommend them to anyone who wants a tailored, high-quality experience with minimum uncertainty. My wife said it felt like having a local friend in every town.
