The day started with an early pickup from our hotel in downtown Cairo with Ahmed El Gohary, our guide and Mohammed our driver. It was still dark as we set off to miss the morning rush hour but the traffic was negotiated expertly by Mohammed. We then hit the 10 lane motorway to Alexandria which was smooth and relatively traffic free.We made a breakfast stop at the halfway point then continued to our first stop, The Catacombs of Kim el Shokafa. This was a very interesting place and we were expertly guided around the underground maze of passages by Ahmed. Next stop was Pompey’s Pillar which was a little disappointing as it was surrounded by newly erected scaffolding. Then onto Qaitbay Citadel which had amazing views from its walls of The Mediterranean and Alexandria. Ahmed asked if we would like to try a local snack and he purchased a Falafel sandwich for us which was excellent. Our last stop was at the library where we opted to get tickets for inside which we thought was well worth it. Once inside this amazing building Ahmed pointed out lots of interesting items. On a previous tour with Ahmed we had asked if we could try Koshary for our lunch. Ahmed suggested we ate back in Cairo at one of his favourite restaurants, Abou Tarek which has specialised in this Egyptian dish for many years . We were very glad that we did as the location, welcome and food were excellent. We were then dropped back at the hotel for 5.30pm and said our farewells.
We had Ahmed with us for our three full day trips whist staying in Cairo and found him to be friendly. Knowledgeable and approachable throughout . We would not hesitate to recommend him if you are planning a visit to Cairo.
