The impressive austere mosque of Kairouan and the equally impressive Roman theatre at El Jem were well worth the long drive from Sousse. We took a private tour booked through Trip advisor. The guide, Nouridine Bukhari, was very knowledgeable, pleasant and a good driver. My husband has a wheelchair, Nouriddine was very helpful and pushed it for us as well. Luckily I had packed some snacks, we didn’t stop for a meal break., I suppose we could have asked but because I spend a long time taking pictures (being able to do this is one of the best things about a private tour) we didn’t have the time for a long lunch break, we did stop for toilet breaks ofcourse! There was lot to see in Kairouan. We went to the tomb complex of Sidi Sahab Balaoui who died in the 8 th c but complex was built in ottoman times( Mosque of the barber) and the Aghlabid water cisterns, hydraulic masterpieces of the medieval Arab world. I was surprised how quiet and tourist-free the tourist sites we visited were. The weather was gorgeous too!
