On our first day in Fort Kochin, we took the half day tour of the area with a local guide. We did not know what to expect, but our guide Shaji, made the experience wonderful! He was so knowledgeable, he spoke perfect English, he guided us to each place effectively but was flexible by allowing us to take our time in the spots we most enjoyed.
When visiting the Chinese fishing nets, we were allowed on board to watch the netting process and even helped pull the ropes to bring up the nets. We visited St. Francis church, , Santa Cruz Basilica, a Dutch cemetery, the Jew Town streets, the one last remaining Jewish synagogue and Mattancherry Palace, where we learned the whole story behind the magnificent frescoes. These were all great highlights of the area's past histories and diverse cultures.
In each place Shaji was very informative and we learned a lot! Plus, he had a good sense of humor which simply made the day more fun. The driver, Vibin, was great also. He too had very good English and there was never a concern about his driving skills, which in India, can be a harrowing first time experience.
I would definitely recommend this tour as it had just enough walking and interesting stops, with a couple of comfortable van car rides to the farther neighborhoods, which was good to cool off for a bit. A bathroom rest stop at a very nice clean shop was also appreciated and their goods for sale were really nice.
In addition, you should check out Fort Kochin because this area is completely different from the city of Cochin. You get the real feel of how the locals live by just walking around. And if you are lucky to get Shaji as your guide, you will enjoy the tour even more because of his genuine goal to educate us about the area.
