We decided to do a day tour even though we had rented a car, so that we could become familiar with the roads and avoid driving through the heavy fog that was present for a couple of days. Our guide Alexandria is very personable and knows a lot about the history and indigenous plants of the island. She was competent when driving through the pea soup fog on the mountains, which I wouldn’t have wanted to do.
Lunch was just ok with indifferent service. The cheese tasting was understated. There is a gift shop with lots of local products to chose from but it felt like that was the point, not the experience. It would be helpful to have bottled water and umbrellas on board.
Taking a tour gave us a good opportunity to stop at many look offs and go into the national parks without stressing about road conditions. The highlight was going into the volcanic cave and walking the trail around the furnas. Fantastic and not to be missed! Oh and the peacock, who kindly opened his fan for us after we flattered him with many pictures. Overall a great experience with a lovely young woman who has a terrific sense of humour. Thank you Alexandria.
