For cycling enthusiasts, the Great Western Greenway is a must when visiting Westport as the path to Achill is well maintained, scenery is fantastic and of course is weather dependent. We fortunately had stellar weather with sunny skies and mild temperatures to make it enjoyable. E-bikes definitely makes it easier but there are a few caveats to consider. The bike rental shop seemed more geared for cyclists who would only go the full 44km distance or part of it and discouraged a total out and back based on the battery capacities of the bikes. They expected to come pick up the bikes and for us to take the bus back. We did the out & back mostly ( 80+ km) and can tell you that 2 of the 3 bikes make it back with plenty of juice (4 of 5 bars left) while one died with 10km to go. That bike seemed to not be fully charged from the get go or had a faulty battery - so make sure you assess the battery levels before leaving the shop and inquire with the shop about the health of the batteries. My strong daughter having experience with heavy bikes was able to pedal the last bit. Lastly, the seats on the bikes are not the most comfortable even with padded bike shorts we were wearing. So expect to deal with a little discomfort and vary the seat position along with standing and you’ll be fine. The views will be enough to distract you! You’ll have minimal road riding to deal with and the shop does an excellent job with an orientation of the entire experience that awaits you!
