We joined the truffle hunting activity as a group of seven (two families, including two little girls aged 3 and 5), and it was an experience none of us will ever forget.
From the very beginning, everything was flawlessly organised. Our journey started at the Natural History Museum of Meteora, where the staff greeted us warmly and prepared us for the adventure ahead. From there, we were taken to a stunning natural reserve, home to oak trees that have stood for more than a century.
There we met Lara, our truffle-hunting dog — without exaggeration, one of the best-trained dogs in Europe. Watching her work was fascinating: she tracked, unearthed, and gently delivered each truffle as if it were a treasure. Despite it being late in the season and unusually dry, the hunt was very successful, and we gathered a remarkable amount of fragrant black truffles.
What made the experience even more special was how inclusive and engaging it was. Both families were immersed, and the two young girls couldn’t get enough of chasing Lara around and holding the truffles like prized trophies. The experts — from Lara’s owner to the museum representatives — were always ready to share their knowledge, answer our questions, and explain how truffles grow, how the soil is preserved, and why sustainability is so important.
After the hunt, we gathered in a beautiful outdoor setting for what turned into a feast. We were welcomed with excellent local white wine and a starter selection of mushrooms, before enjoying a freshly prepared dish of penne pasta with mushrooms, cheese, and a light cream sauce. It was absolutely delicious — rich, full of flavour, and unlike anything you’ll find in a typical restaurant.
The day concluded with a guided tour of the Natural History Museum. The little ones were captivated by the displays of taxidermy animals and the chance to learn about the four main types of mushrooms, alongside countless other fascinating varieties.
This experience was educational, interactive, and truly memorable — blending nature, gastronomy, and family fun in the most authentic way. If you’re in the Meteora area, truffle hunting here is an absolute must!
Ευχαριστούμε :}
