We did this tour after going to Badaling the day prior and, wow, what a difference. Matianyu was quite a different experience— less crowded, more scenic views, and arguably fewer steep climbs. We were there close to peak fall colors and the view did not disappoint. The lunch, however, did. It was a buffet lunch, but the food was mostly cold and disappointing. Customers were only western tourists and their guides. Lunch was also only reached after a stop at a jade factory below the restaurant, where the entire point was to sell (seemingly) overpriced bangles. Linda was a nice and knowledgeable tour guide. She mostly gave us the history of the places during the driving trips, rather than while walking around once we arrived. She was sometimes hard to hear in a larger van. We had a group of 4 who split their transport between cable car and ski lift/ toboggan- I was somewhat surprised Linda didn’t join either group to traverse the wall, but maybe it was too hard to choose. Otherwise, she was very helpful to navigate to, through, and from the sites and provided a nice tour of the Summer Palace, although somewhat rigid in what areas we would visit. Would have liked to go visit the temple at the time and seemed we only didn't to avoid crowds.
