Bioluminescente baai-nachtkajakken, Laguna Grande, Fajardo

We enjoyed kayaking through the mangroves and seeing the bioluminescence. We went close to the new moon, which should have been a good time for darkness, but, unfortunately clouds were reflecting a lot of light. But, under a tarp, we took turns putting our heads in the water and splashing to be able to see the sparkles of light.). Sadly, we were disappointed in the way the tour was conducted. There were about 30 people. Too many! And I there were far too many groups out in the mangroves- too many tour operators. ( Thsts not the operator’s fault, but there should be limits.). Within our group, our guides told folks to go single file, but they didn’t enforce it. On our return, Folks bunched up several times and we couldn’t continue. Rather than fight for a place we hung back to let each jam up clear. When clear, several guides took off way ahead But then the last guide or two plus at least one other kayak was/were behind us and we couldn’t see ahead of us. We ran into a big tree limb in the dark-. No one one was hurt but it was not safe. I would not go with this tour operator again.

Great experience with great guides! Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I loved the night kayaking experience and being able to see such an amazing and unique natural phenomenon!

We went with this group (of many) as they advertised a max group size 12 and we had several with no kayak experience. However, at least 30 were in the group. Helpful instruction lasted maybe 5 minutes. Several face-on encounters with the mangroves as light and directions were limited. Life jackets are super stinky! Even though very close to the new moon, which is to be optimum, too much light pollution to see much except under a wet and stinky tarp. Kayak paddles do not have gaskets on the handles that keep water from dumping into your lap with each stroke. No exaggeration, will be wet from the waist down, for no good reason. A smaller group, as advertised, would be great. Maybe spray the life jackets with febreeze. A little show at the edge, in the shadows, such as with hand operated bilge pump or even tossing buckets of water. I did this tour 50 years ago when I was a teenager, (in a motor boat, which is no longer a possibility) and it was super dramatic. The location within in kayak village was not clear. We parked too far away as this group was last along the park. A fun adventure but as sis-in-law says "underwhelming."
