My partner and I had an absolutely amazing time on the safari when we went in December 2022. We first took a jeep ride to the village of the safari guides (with a quick stop on the way to look at fossils), from there we mounted our camels and set off.
Every day of the trip involved a few hours of camel riding which got our bums quite sore. However, by the last day, we'd gotten completely adjusted and didn't want to get off! It was a really nice way of taking in the desert environment. The camels all had their own personalities and getting to know them was fun too.
At the end of the first day we watched an amazing sunset over flat plains from our camp on the hilly dunes. The night sky we saw afterwards was the highlight of our trip to India. As the moon comes up several hours after sunset and there is not enough moisture in the air for clouds, we were able to get the incredibly clear view of the stars. With this clear view we were able to see more shooting stars in 1 night than we had ever before in our lives. The second night was just as spectacular.
The cameleers were super friendly and took great care of us. We had some great chats with Sawai in particular. We enjoyed hearing about their lifestyle and culture, and getting to eat their delicious food.
We also saw so much wildlife: goats, dogs, cows, desert mice and heaps of birds!
All in all it was an experience of a lifetime and we'd recommend it highly.
To note: toilets are holes you dig yourself. Its no problem at all, you just need to bring toilet paper/tissues, a plastic bag for your waste paper and sanitiser. If this is not your cup of tea, maybe this isn't for you.
