Honestly, we found this tour to be a bit of a disappointment considering the very high price tag. The national park itself is stunning and definitely worth a visit. We just did not really find much value add for going with this tour.
I would have assumed that if you were going on a trip with a tour company, perhaps they would lead you off the beaten trail a bit... kit you out with snowshoes to get you away from the crowds. But no, you just walk the same trail that anyone visiting the park can easily navitage on their own – and walk for free. Even without this, surely going with a guide would provide some extra value? Provide you with information that would make the trip more meaningful than going on your own? Not really.
Our tour guide, Aleksi, seemed aloof and not particularly friendly. The majority of the ride to/from the park was in complete silence. This was fine, I don't expect a guide to be providing information while he is concentrating on the road. But once we reached the park, it seemed to be more of the same. At the trailhead, he pointed out where we would be hiking on a map. Shortly thereafter, he pointed out some lichen. And that was about it. Any other information the group received was through questions we directly asked him. As a guide, I would expect you to know and share some things about the national park, Finnish culture, any interesting facts about the microclimate or environment here – I mean anything. He would answer questions that you asked, but there wasn't any information being provided without prompting.
After our lunch stop, he took off, walking 20+ meters ahead of the group for the majority of the walk back. Like - k, bye! We felt more like he was a time keeper for the hike than a guide. Like he was just going through the motions to get us back to the van. Honestly, it really brought down the experience in what was otherwise a really beautiful place.
He did point out areas where he would take our photos and also took some general landscape photos, all of which were shared in a gallery at the end of the trip for you to download. This is a nice perk, though still hard to justify the price tag of the trip. We honestly picked Beyond Arctic because we liked their focus on photography and thought the trip was geared more toward photographers. But really they just take some photos to provide to you.
Unless you are uncomfortable with winter driving, I would recommend skipping the high price tag of this tour and making the drive out to Riisitinturi on your own. You can enjoy the same trail they are walking on for this tour, at your own pace, and with the same amount of 'guiding'. If you do go with a tour, there are other well-rated tour groups that offer this tour at a lower price point.
