My review is based on my husband's and my experience at the Landmark West Walking Tour on Sept. 13, 2025, with the tour guide at that time. We have lived in St. Louis for over 20 years and are familiar with the building,s but we wanted to learn about their architecture as advertised. Our guide introduced himself as a retired history teacher who taught at a local catholic private school. During the tour, it was evident that he did not know much about the architecture of the buildings, and knew more about the history of St. Louis. He pointed out buildings by name and would very briefly talk about the history of the building, but not about their architecture. In fact, I had to ask him to talk about the architecture, but his knowledge was evidently very limited. He seemed to know more of the city's history after he repeatedly pointed to the Stifel Theater as Kiel Auditorium without explaining that the building has been called Stifel Theater since 2018. In fact, Kiel auditorium closed its doors in 1991 and sat empty for 2 decades, re-opened as Peabody Opera House before it became Stifel Theater in 2018 - a fact our guide failed to mention. Beyond the guide's lack of knowledge about the building's architecture, he would also rant about his political and religious beliefs and ideologies, which were highly inappropriate for the tour. He also talked about his racial biases when he referred to St. Louis as a Catholic City that changed gears to accept refugee muslims - again, highly inappropriate! This is supposed to be about the architecture of landmark buildings.
I had heard some really good things about this tour from friends, and we decided to try it out for ourselves. We left the tour after only about an hour when we realized our tour guide was not knowledgeable about the architecture and was more apt to rant about his political and religious beliefs. I'm sure this company has other tour guides who are more knowledgeable and better trained.
