If you’re looking for a relaxing way to end your day in the US Virgin Islands, look no further. The sunset sail offered by Stormy Pirates was probably the most relaxing 2 ½ hours of our vacation. The crew for our charter, which also happened to the owners of the company and their sun, provided non-stop service from booking until after the charter was over. If supporting families who live on the island is important to you, Stormy Pirates should be at the top of your list.
We had to rebook due to wearing out our children on our first full day on the island. Originally scheduled for a full day charter, Kristie, who owns the company with her husband, was accommodating as we tried to search for a viable option that wouldn’t have everybody jumping overboard from our overly tired children. We finally determined that a sunset cruise would be a great option and we couldn’t have been more right on.
After explaining the rules of the boat, we were offered complimentary bottomless rum punches. Our family, which consisted of my wife and two kids, aged 9 and 5, joined another young couple at the front of the boat. Bean bags, which our kids barely moved from, offered comfortable seating if you didn’t want to sit on the netting or hull. Note that the netting was covered with a canvas to make it comfy and to protect objects from falling from the boat.
The hosts explained all of the details of the various landmarks as we passed them and were patient as we asked follow-up questions. Once most of our questions were answered, the conversation died down and the engines ceased, you realized why sailors loved the open sea. The silence, while deafening, was an invisible reminder that you were living the life and in that moment nothing else mattered.
Our charter ended up at Pizza Pi where we enjoyed delicious pizza made on a sailboat and delivered by a dinghy. As we plowed our way through the pizzas, the diminishing light in the sky was a reminder that the real show was about to begin – sunset on the water.
If you’ve ever experienced it, you’ll know how magical that moment is. While you want to grab your phone and preserve the moment, you’ll feel this overwhelming urge to just put it down and enjoy the experience. Sitting on a boat in Christmas Cove as the sun sets is worth the price of admission alone.
It’s hard to stand out among the hordes of charter companies offering trips to everyone on the island. Stormy Pirates has managed to set itself apart by offering exceptional personalized service, unique tours and a family-friendly alternative by a family that actually calls the island home. If you’re looking for a way to get out on the water for a day or a few hours, Stormy Pirates is your answer.
