This was the last in a series of 4 driving tours of the California Gold Country that my wife and I recently took over a long weekend. We are big history buffs and really enjoyed learning more than we ever imagined about the classic gold rush era. This tour really stood out as the characters we were introduced to brought to life the era. This tour really focused on many of the interesting women from that time and the roles they played. The tour starts out in the quaint little town of Angels Camp (of the Mark Twain Jumping Frog fame) and featured some incredible natural wonders such as the Calaveras Big Trees, the Moaning Caverns and the Natural Bridges Trailhead. Columbia State Historic Park was like literally stepping back in time where you got to experience first hand a well preserved gold rush town, complete with gold panning and stage coach riding opportunities. For railroad fans the Railtown 1897 State Park outside of Jamestown is not to be missed. For classic TV and western lovers it was fun to be able to walk through the old town which has served as the backdrop for literally hundreds of shows. So much fun and the perfect capper to 2 days of fun and adventure. This series is a must for any history buff or anyone just looking to explore the hidden gems of the California Gold Country.
