When my husband and I decided to tour England’s West Counties, we used three different tour resources: Mad Max for Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Cotswold villages; the hop-on, hop-off bus for Bath, and a Blue Badge guide for towns in Wiltshire and Somerset. Mad Max was far and away the best tour experience. Andy, our driver and tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, relatable, and entertaining. He is also extraordinarily kind. My husband has mobility issues, and Andy made certain that his needs were accommodated. It should be noted that Andy also paid attention the needs of all his travelers.
The tour was filled with unexpected surprises: when we glimpsed a white (chalk) horse carved into the hillside, Andy pulled off the road for a better view—and we found ourselves next to a paddock of real horses, one of them white! (Andy kindly provided carrots for those who wanted to feed the horses.)
Early in the tour, Andy mentioned the importance of the Salisbury plain, and I mentioned Peter Gabriels’s song “Salisbury Hill.” He promised to come back to that, and indeed he did. Towards the end of the day, as we were winding down Salisbury Hill, he cranked up Peter Gabriel. It doesn’t get any better than that!
I cannot recommend Mad Max tours highly enough—it was the highlight of our trip to the region. If you travel with them, be sure to ask for Andy!
